Ullapool as a base for exploring the north-west Highlands

Ullapool is a perfect base for exploring the north-west Highlands.

It sits beside Loch Broom, conveniently located for day trips to the wider area, including Wester Ross, Assynt, Coigach, Dundonnell, Gairloch and the Western Isles via the ferry to Lewis. Ullapool is a small village, but it has a good mix of food shops, cafés, restaurants, takeaways, galleries, excursions, leisure and everyday services.

Corylus sits above Ullapool, looking out across Loch Broom. The village is close by, but Corylus feels quiet, open and set apart. For guests who want to explore widely but return somewhere calm, comfortable and well-equipped, this balance works well.

Why a good base matters here

Distances in the north-west Highlands can be deceptive.

A place may look close on a map, but the roads are often winding, single-track, slow-moving and subject to the weather. A day out can involve scenic drives, changing conditions, passing places, viewpoints, stops for food, and the opportunity to ad-lib and take a different route.

Having an adventurous day out exploring means the place you return to really matters. After a long drive, a wet walk, a beach day, a swim, a boat trip or a slow road through the hills, it helps to come back to warmth, space, a good kitchen, comfortable beds and a view.

A good base is where the real rest, recovery and recuperation happen.

Ullapool and Lochbroom

Ullapool is a destination in its own right.

It is a village with a harbour, marina, ferry terminal, fishing boats, cafés, shops, galleries, music, food and a strong sense of local life. Ullapool gives visitors enough facilities and amenities to stay for several days, while staying at Corylus gives the option to step away from the busier village centre when you choose to.

Lochbroom itself offers plenty close to home: local walks, sea loch views, beaches, viewpoints, Corrieshalloch Gorge, Lael Forest Garden, Leckmelm Gardens, Rhue Point and Ardmair Beach.

Some days can stay local. A short walk, coffee in Ullapool, a beach visit, dinner at Corylus and an evening watching the light over Loch Broom can be enough.

Assynt, Coigach and the Summer Isles

North of Ullapool, the landscape opens into some of the most distinctive and spectacular scenery in the north-west Highlands: mountains, lochs, beaches, islands, scattered settlements, long views and quiet coastal roads.

From Corylus, guests can travel towards Achiltibuie, Stac Pollaidh, the Summer Isles, Suilven, Lochinver, Achmelvich and Clachtoll.

This works well as a day out from Ullapool, especially when there is time to move slowly and enjoy the journey. The drive itself is part of the experience, with changing views, small roads, viewpoints, beaches and plenty of reasons to stop.

A first day might be a beach and viewpoint day. Another might be for a longer walk, a new beach, photography, wildlife, food, or time exploring.

Wester Ross

Ullapool also works well for exploring parts of Wester Ross to the south and west.

Guests can travel towards Corrieshalloch Gorge, Dundonnell, Little Loch Broom, Gruinard, Gairloch, Loch Maree and the Beinn Eighe area. Some of these make better full-day outings, while others can be paired with the journey to or from Ullapool.

The landscape changes quickly: sea lochs, woodland, open hill, beaches, mountain views and long stretches of road where the journey is part of the day.

A good base above Ullapool makes these days feel possible without needing to keep moving accommodation every night.

The ferry to Lewis

Ullapool is also the ferry port for Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.

Corylus can work well before or after a ferry crossing, particularly for guests who want time to pause, settle and enjoy the mainland side of the journey. Staying longer around Ullapool also gives space to experience the area in its own right, rather than treating it only as a departure point.

Local days from Corylus

Not every day needs to be a big drive.

From Corylus, guests can stay close to home and still have a good day. There are walks from the door, short outings around Lochbroom, beaches near Ullapool, places for coffee and food, and the village itself close by.

A local day might include:

  • coffee on the deck with freshly ground coffee from Ullapool Unpacked

  • a walk from the door on the local hill paths

  • time exploring Ullapool

  • a visit to Rhue Lighthouse or Ardmair Beach

  • lunch or takeaway from one of the excellent local eateries

  • reading a new book from one of the local bookshops

  • cooking with locally purchased ingredients

  • watching the weather move across Loch Broom

These days are part of why Ullapool works as a base. The wider area is close, but the immediate area is worth time too.

Planning around Highland weather

Weather shapes travel here.

A good forecast might open up a hill walk, a beach day, a boat trip or a longer drive. A mixed forecast might be better for a local walk, a café, a gallery, a short outing, or a day close to Corylus with the view offering the entertainment.

It helps to plan lightly. Have ideas rather than fixed expectations. Keep one or two bigger outings in mind, but leave space to adapt.

This is one of the advantages of staying longer. If a day changes, the trip does not have to feel spoiled. It simply takes another shape.

Why Corylus works as a base

Corylus is close enough to Ullapool to use the village easily, but quiet enough to feel separate from the busier centre.

The apartments are self-catering, so guests can shape days around weather, food, energy and plans. The kitchens are properly equipped. The bedrooms are comfortable. There is space to dry off, cook, rest and look out. Walks are available from the door, and the wider north-west Highlands are within reach.

We designed and built Corylus to support life in this landscape. Good indoor-outdoor spaces make coming and going easy. The covered deck helps guests enjoy the changing weather. Extensive glazing keeps the view present in all conditions. Inside, the apartments are warm, comfortable and well equipped, with the things guests need close at hand.

For guests exploring Assynt, Coigach, Lochbroom, Wester Ross and the Summer Isles, Corylus offers a settled base: a place to leave from, and a place to return to.
