Unterkünfte in Ullapool, Lochbroom und Wester Ross

Ullapool is a useful base for exploring Lochbroom, Wester Ross, Assynt, Coigach and the wider north-west Highlands.

Some visitors want to stay in the village, close to cafés, shops, pubs and the ferry. Others prefer somewhere quieter, with more space, views and privacy, while still being close enough to use Ullapool easily.

There are several types of accommodation in and around the village, from hotels and guesthouses to campsites, cabins, lodges and self-catering houses.

This guide is a starting point. Guests staying at Corylus also have access to our comprehensive digital guide, with more detailed local recommendations, practical information and our own knowledge of the area.

Staying in Ullapool village

Staying in Ullapool village is useful if you want everything close at hand.

The village has cafés, restaurants, takeaways, shops, galleries, the harbour, marina and ferry terminal. For visitors arriving without a car, travelling by ferry, or wanting to walk out for food and drinks, the centre can be very convenient.

The trade-off is that it can feel busier around ferry times and in the main visitor season.

Hotels, inns, guesthouses and B&Bs

Ullapool has a range of hotels, inns, guesthouses and B&Bs.

These can work well for shorter visits, ferry connections, one-night stops, or guests who prefer breakfast included and less planning around meals.

For guests who want more space, privacy and flexibility, self-catering or a quieter stay outside the centre may be a better fit.

Campsites and campervan stays

There are campsites and campervan options in and around Ullapool, which can suit people touring the north-west Highlands or travelling the NC500.

These stays are part of the accommodation mix in the area, especially for shorter stops, lower-cost trips and more outdoors-focused travel.

They are a different kind of stay from Corylus, but useful to understand when choosing where to base yourself.

Cabins, lodges and more secluded stays

The wider Ullapool area also has cabins, lodges and more secluded places to stay.

These can suit visitors who want a stronger sense of being tucked into the landscape, sometimes further from the village and everyday services.

Ecotone Cabins is a good example of this kind of stay. It is a separate accommodation business, connected to Corylus through our wider family and design/build work, and offers carefully designed cabins set within our family woodland at Leckmelm, just three miles south of Ullapool.

For some visitors, that kind of stay will be exactly right: more secluded, cabin-led, simple to settle into, and closely connected to the outdoors.

Corylus is different. It offers more upscale self-catering apartments above Loch Broom, with expansive views and more direct access to Ullapool village, the harbour, food, shops and the wider north-west Highlands.

Self-catering in Ullapool and Lochbroom

Self-catering works well in Ullapool and the surrounding area.

It gives guests more space, privacy and flexibility. You can eat out when you want to, cook when you prefer a quieter evening, and plan your days around the weather rather than fixed meal times.

Good self-catering is especially useful in the Highlands because plans often change. Some days are for walks, beaches or longer drives. Others are better spent slowly, with food in the kitchen, good heating, a book and a view.

Staying above Ullapool

Staying above Ullapool gives a different experience from staying in the village centre.

You are still close to the shops, cafés, harbour and ferry, but with more quiet, space and a stronger sense of the surrounding landscape.

Corylus sits above Ullapool, looking out across Loch Broom. The village centre is around five minutes away by car, or about 25 minutes on foot using a mix of pavement and single-track rural road.

For many guests, this balance works well: close to Ullapool, but not in the middle of it.

Staying further into Assynt, Coigach or Wester Ross

Some visitors choose to stay further from Ullapool, towards Assynt, Coigach, Achiltibuie, Lochinver, Gairloch or other parts of Wester Ross.

This can work well if your plans are focused on one particular area. If you mainly want to explore Assynt, it may make sense to stay closer to Lochinver. If you want to spend most of your time around Coigach and the Summer Isles, Achiltibuie may be a natural choice.

The trade-off is that you may be further from Ullapool’s shops, restaurants, cafés and services.

For many visitors, Ullapool is a useful middle ground: a real village, with food and services, close to Loch Broom and well placed for wider days out.

Using Ullapool as a base

Ullapool works well as a base because it connects several different kinds of Highland trip: Lochbroom, Wester Ross, Assynt, Coigach, the Summer Isles, Corrieshalloch Gorge, local beaches, hill walks and the ferry route to Lewis.

Roads in the north-west Highlands are often slower than they look on a map, so it helps to choose somewhere you are happy to return to at the end of the day.

Wo Corylus hingehört

Corylus ist für Gäste, denen es wichtig ist, wo sie übernachten.

It is a quiet, high-quality self-catering stay above Ullapool, with Loch Broom views, comfort, privacy and easy access to the village and the wider north-west Highlands.

It is best suited to couples, families, small groups of friends and slower-travel visitors who want a comfortable place to return to after time outside.

It is not aimed at guests looking for budget accommodation, one-night stays, hot tubs or dog-friendly accommodation.

Fjell, Fjord and whole-property stays

Corylus has two self-catering apartments.

Fjell is a one-bedroom apartment, well suited to couples.

Fjord is a two-bedroom apartment, suited to couples, families or small groups of friends.

The two apartments can also be booked together as a whole-property stay. This can work well for families or friends travelling together who want to be close, while still having separate self-contained spaces.

A note on NC500 stays and slower travel

Many people searching for accommodation in this part of Scotland are travelling on or near the NC500 route.

Corylus can work well for guests exploring the north-west Highlands by car, but it is not designed as a quick stopover. It is better suited to people who want to stay a little longer, settle in, and get more from the area than a fast journey can offer.

The real value of this place often comes with more time: a slower morning by Loch Broom, a walk from the door, a meal in the village, a change of plan because of the weather, or an evening watching the light move across the water.

We are happy to welcome guests travelling the NC500, but we especially value visitors who want to travel thoughtfully. Staying longer can help guests build a better connection with the area, while also supporting local shops, cafés, restaurants, guides, makers and services.

That is the kind of visit Corylus is best suited to: slower, more settled, and more connected to Ullapool and the surrounding landscape.

Choosing where to stay

The best place to stay depends on the kind of trip you want.

Stay in the village for cafés, restaurants, shops and ferry convenience. Choose a hotel, inn or guesthouse if you want a shorter stay, breakfast included or ferry convenience. Choose a campsite or campervan stop if you are touring and want a simple, flexible base. Choose a cabin or lodge if you want a more secluded landscape stay. Stay further into Assynt or Coigach if your plans are focused there. Stay above Ullapool if you want views, easy access to the village and a quiet, private base for exploring the area.

Choose Corylus if you want high-quality self-catering above Ullapool, with outstanding views, considered comfort, conscientious hosts and a strong connection to the surrounding area.
