The setting
Corylus sits on the hillside above Ullapool, looking out across Loch Broom and the surrounding hills. The village is a short drive away, or around 20 minutes on foot, with the return walk climbing steadily back up.
The position offers a clear sense of being slightly removed from the village, with open views, more privacy, and a quieter atmosphere, while still remaining close to shops, food, and access to the wider area.
The final approach follows a steep, single-track road up to Braes, overlooking Ullapool.
The apartments
Two architecturally designed self-catering apartments, Fjell and Fjord, arranged side by side within a single building.
Fjell - one-bedroom apartment, looking south and east along the loch and shaped by the morning light.
Fjord - two-bedroom apartment, facing south and west towards Ullapool and the evening sun.
Each apartment has its own private entrance and is arranged as a complete, self-contained space.
Conceived, designed and built
Corylus was designed and built by local company North Woods Construction, with a focus on clarity, proportion, and how the space is used. The project was conceived and is run by the team behind Ecotone Cabins.
The layout is open and clear, with large glazed openings that frame the view from both living spaces and bedrooms. Materials include timber cladding, birch plywood, stone worktops, and architectural corrugated steel, used simply and carefully.
The approach is modern and minimal, offering a more contemporary alternative to traditional Highland accommodation.
Living in the space
The apartments are designed to work comfortably throughout the day and in all conditions.
Covered decks extend the living space outward, allowing time outside in most weather. Large windows maintain a strong connection to the landscape, while deep insulation, triple glazing, and underfloor heating provide a stable indoor environment.
Many guests choose to spend extended time here, cooking, reading, or watching the weather move across the loch.
Exclusive use
Fjell and Fjord can be booked together for exclusive use, accommodating up to six guests across both apartments.
This arrangement works well for families or small groups, allowing shared time while maintaining independent spaces, separate kitchens, and bathrooms for each bedroom.
